Managed to add 2 more year ticks for the patch in 5 Tufted duck and a Sparrowhawk. 40 species all in all wasn't too bad considering the weather. Didn't manage any decent pics i was shaking with the cold.
Only managed 33 species about 14 less than my first outing last year. As i was arriving Paul was leaving and we had a quick look for the Jack snipe that had been showing recently before he left, but no luck. Several species i would have expected were missing but there is plenty of time left.l didn't manage any photo's worth publishing but i am hoping to vastly improve my skills this year. Happy new year and hope you all have a good birding year.greg Ahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02322583671543467701noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-171698798600901171.post-26692049300527183642012-10-09T19:45:00.000+01:002012-10-09T19:45:06.145+01:00100 up at the BayAfter being on 98 for a few weeks finally managed to reach a 100 for Barking bay thanks to a tree pipit and Jay. Didn't arrive on site till about 10 but still had quite a good day ( apart from the fact that the probable trappers were there again at the choats rd end of the middle ditch, have shown what they have done to lan and given him their car reg, he is going to check it out again tomorrow and ring police again). On the mud were 5 Blackwits, 3 common sanpipers, 2 ringed plover and 67 Redshank. Still can't get any decent photo's but heres a couple anyway.
There were about 50 Meadow pipits and 1 tree pipit, 5 Skylark. The Linnet flock is over a 100 now. Also had 7 Jay fly over and 4 swallows. Also made short visits on Monday and Tuesday after work There were still plenty of Meadow pipits on Monday also thought i heard a lesser Redpoll call by the middle ditch. Only heard it once and when about 80 Linnet took off from the area i gave up looking. On Tuesday had another Jay but also as i pulled up in the car park a bird flew into the bush right in front of me about 20 mtrs away it popped out briefly b4 flying of along the embankment, itlooked like a coal tit but i only had briefest of views.greg Ahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02322583671543467701noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-171698798600901171.post-81992211805003942742012-09-27T23:19:00.000+01:002012-09-27T23:19:27.431+01:00bArking bay & RainhamBeen very quiet at the bay lately, despite many sortee's I've not been able to add to my list for the year. 5 Redshank 2 Common sandpipers 1 Ringed plover 6 swallows and 3 Whinchat being the highlights of about 7 visits. I saw Paul along the middle ditch and we stopped for a chat when he spotted a Kingfisher right in front of us, which scarpered before i could get my camera on it. We hung around hoping it would come back which it did about 10 or 15 minutes later.
Not only a year tick for the patch but also the first kingfisher i have seen over there (happy days),
i am slowly sneaking up on the 100. Managed to miss the Tawny pipit last week by a couple of minutes and despite spending plenty of time over there this week it wasn't seen again.
Popped over on Sunday evening for 2 ringed plover and about 500 Black headeds.
Quick visit tonight after work but tide was in so no waders, but did have a Little egret fly over (1st for me this year). What with the Hobby the other week puts me on 97 for the year slowly, inching towards my 100 target.
Last Saturday was probably best day for a while with 2 Oystercatchers 12 Redshank 5 Dunlin and a Ringed plover. Raptors were 2 Kestrel 1 Peregrine and my 1st Hobby this year. not been able to get any decent photo's with the rubbish weather we have had so far either. Today was very quiet with just 1 Oystercatcher a Sparrowhawk and a juv Great crested grebe of note.

Had a few visits to Rainham as well managed to get quite a few year 1sts for there as i havn't been much this year. Saw the Spoonbill last week but missed out on the Wood sandpiper also had a Greenshank , Willow Warbler ,Yellow Wagtail, Yellow legged gull ( the good thing about Rainham is there is alway someone around to point out birds for you) and Common sandpiper.

Have been Working around Lowestoft area so i popped into Minsmere on the way home one afternoon. It was a case of nipping between Hides when the rain stopped, but it was an enjoyable walk nonetheless. Walked around the scrape trail missed a Glossy ibis by about Half hour, but had 3 Spotted redshank ,1 Greenshank, 5 Black tailed godwits 30+ Avocets 2 Little gulls 4 Sandwich terns 2 Barnacle geese as well as plenty of the more common birds i see at home.
Still can't find a med gull, not surprising really as i have Gull dyslexia. If i see a group of gulls they all just morph into black headed.
When i arrived i didn't intend going too far from the Riverside centre just wanted to try some digiscoping.
As i was setting up 2 guys came past who had been down by the cemex jetty and said that the Bonapartes gull was there so i thought i might as well go and try to find it, as it now had a mottled head and i wondered if i could pick it out for myself as i am rubbish with gulls (most other species too). i had an image in my mind of what it was like last Saturday and managed to find it as it didn't really look to different. . Took loads of dodgy pics and of i went. Later when looking at the photo's at home i noticed how prominant the black spot is compared to Richard Bonsers pictures from yesterday. Could be just the dodgy pics or amazingly there could be 2 birds. l could also have took photo's of the wrong bird half the time. Also had my 1st House martin of the year.
On my way to the bay this morning i got a text from Paul saying that there was a Bonapartes gull at crossness visible from Barking bay. By the time i arrived at had gone flying west l missed it by about 10 minutes. Paul went off to the outfall to try to relocate it whilst I carried on searching round the patch looking for anything new but it was quiet all over. Then about 10.40 i got a call from paul saying it was back and now in the bay. A small crowd had now arrived and were enjoying the views. Thats the great thing aboutbirding you never really know whhat your going to see.
Arriving at 6.15 Saturday morning with the intent of adding Turnstone,Black tern, Sedge warbler & Yellow wagtail by 2pm i only had Sedge warbler & Black tern. Sunday Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday wasn't any better, in fact Paul now had a male Redstart & Lesser whitethroat to add to my wish list.
I managed to locate a lesser whitethroat but not the others. As well as seeing Paul over there l also came across Shaun, Dave & Geoff Harding during the week its good to see more birders over there. Geoff glimpsed a female Redstart on the mound near where Paul saw the male but they both became very elusive or moved on as were not seen again. The weather has been rubbish all week making photography difficult if not impossible at times (with my set up anyway). Visiting the Bay, Creekmouth and Silver birch wood as given me 12 year ticks and a bonus tick for the Grey lag goose i saw in February but forgot to put on my list. New for the year in no particular order are Collared dove, Barwit, Cuckoo, Corn bunting, Mistle thrush, Artic tern, Swift, Whimbrel, Whinchat, Reed warbler, Greenshank 7 last but definatly not least Short eared owl.
I spent a most evenings last week at Barking bay after work looking for the Ring Ouzels and thanks to Paul on Wednesday i saw them, also had my 1st little ringed plover of the year during the week. I decided to go to the bay first on Saturday morning then over to Rainham managed 43 species at Barking including 2 Tufted ducks, 2 Oystercatchers (that must have had a domestic as there was 1 at each end of the mud) . 4 Common terns and 2 Whitethroats both year ticks giving me 4 for the week. Also had 4 swallows flying through at various intervals.
Walked along the path to the end and a Swallow flew across as i reached the middle ditch. Spent the next few hours wandering about, but only came across the usual suspects I decided to cross Renwick rd and try to get a photo of a chiffchaff in the birch wood. Whilst there i had 2 chiff chaff, 1 greater spotted woodpecker and my first Blackcap. 1 in the middle of the wood and another at the edge, this bird was with three other birds but i couldn't see whether or not these were also blackcap.
Walking back to the car there were about 25 Blackwits flying through along the Thames.
It was still a bit foggy but there wasn't much to see on the mud or river. walked to the middle ditch where a mystery bird was hiding and jumping out flying along the ditch and hiding again. Turned out to be a green sandpiper (must be the one dave saw yesterday as were the 2 green woodpeckers).
Also went over Barking bay yesterday after work at about 5pm and today at about 3.30 still no migrants, can't be long now hopefully. Did see about 100 black wits and 1 barwit today at barking bay. As for migrants to quote Diana Ross l'm still waiting!.greg Ahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02322583671543467701noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-171698798600901171.post-89698528095861674572012-03-04T00:45:00.000+00:002012-03-04T00:45:36.549+00:00Where's the sun gone. Got up this morning and headed for Barking bay lovely dull grey skies with rain forecast for about midday. As i was walking onto the patch i saw a Pied wagtail sitting on the fence about 20 yards away. This is only the second one i have seen here this year(it might even be the same one twice). I remember when i used to come here as a kid you would probably see 20 or 30 wagtails a day more in the summer. The foreshore produced plenty of Teal, Shelducks, assorted Gulls (as far as i could see black headed, herring and a gbb the visibility wasn't good enough for me to spot anything better if it was there. 4 Curlew, 2 Oystercatchers and 2 Great crested grebes on the water.
The scrub and ditches didn't fare much better either, Just the usual and a Golden oriole actually it was probably a green woodpecker. As i was watching a Chaffinch in the trees at the back of the middle ditch through my bins, a yellow bird flew through. As i often see Green woodpeckers there and am never likely to see a Golden oriole i think i am safe in saying it was a woody even though it looked very yellow. I hung around for a while and walked along the path where it was headed but it never reappeared.
As i walked along the foreshore to the scrub and middle ditch there were a few Skylarks and Meadow pipits, plenty of Chaffinch and Dunnock but nothing else until i reached the choats rd end of the ditch where there were 4 grey heron in the ditch and a Sparrowhawk flying over the works area. l Headed for the Cemex ditch where i saw the highlight of the morning in the form of 2 long tailed tits.
This Stone chat was so close as i was walking back to the visitor centre i should have birdnapped it and took it to Barking Bay as i still haven't had one there this year and they have loads at Rainham.
The tide was in so i just had a quick scan round the birds roosting on the jetty, l noticed that apart from the gulls and lapwings the rest were in pairs. There were a mixture of gulls including 1 GBB, about 20 lapwing, 2 Curlew 2 Canada geese 2 Oystercatchers (first of the year) and 2 small waders i couldn't I.D as the light was fading and i only had a small pair of bins with me.greg Ahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02322583671543467701noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-171698798600901171.post-87339561735061305072012-02-20T19:33:00.000+00:002012-02-20T19:33:42.653+00:00Its getting tougher.Made 4 visits to barking bay this week, including Saturday and Sunday but didn't see anything new.
Also went over Rainham marshes on Sunday afternoon and it was absolutely rammed, even had staff in the car park telling you where to park. Was hoping to see 100+ species this year at barking, but it looks like it will be difficult now, as things are really slowing up after a flying start. I will keep spending as much time as i can over there and see what happens. Didn't really take any photo's this week a couple of the Grey plovers and Blackwits on Saturday was all.
On Sunday though at Rainham there were some real good opportunities of getting good shots of Great tits and Dunnocks, but with about 1800 quids worth of camera equipment slung round my neck i soon realised it was useless as i'd left 10 quids worth of sd cards at home. Still with out worrying about photo's i spent more time observing which made a pleasant change.greg Ahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02322583671543467701noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-171698798600901171.post-76423233318325685422012-02-11T22:41:00.000+00:002012-02-11T22:41:38.053+00:00Birds in flightArrived at the patch a bit later than i intended about 4 hours to be precise, didn't get there till 11.30. walked along the foreshore to the cemex jetty passing about 5 meadow pipits, 150 dunlin, 50 Redshank, 50 lapwing 3 curlew 2 grey plover 30 each of shelduck and teal on the way. at the jetty there were more of each and about 40 blackwits. Moving in to the cemex ditch had 2 snipe fly through and a moorhen and a pair of mallards.up onto the scrub with about 100 linnets, 50 + lapwings a solitary skylark and 30 or so fieldfare which flew off towards choats rd except this one.
Got to barking at 8, the temperature in the car said -4 don't know if that was right, but it was bloody cold. Walked along the foreshore saw a lot of lapwing,Redshank,Gulls and 5 curlew on the way down. . At the end of the concrete path by the cemex jetty i flushed 7 snipe, watching them as they gave me a side on view convinces me that it was a jack snipe i saw last week. Feeding on the mud just past the jetty were about 25 blackwits. Spent about half hour inland but it was very quiet plus by now i was begining to freeze, so headed back to the river. With the tide nearly in i now struck lucky with 4 year firsts for the patch. 4 tufted duck and 4 Gadwall. Looking a bit further out i thought there were 3 more Gadwall, until i saw the white front to the neck on one of them. time to get the camera out unfortunatly they flew off towards crossness.
Walked along to the cemex ditch( flushing several skylark and meadow pipit on the way} and spent about 45minutes there. Didn't see to much a couple of song thrush and a redwing were the highlights also 2 Mute swans and a grey Heron flew over. I then moved on to the scrub flushing out more shylark and meadow pipits on my way to the middle ditch.(still can't find the stonechat that i saw regulary before the new year).
Had my usual stop at the small pool for a cigarette,lI was there for about 10 minutes when the star turn arrived. A Merlin, it whizzed past me about 3ft off the ground kept low across the ditch up the embankment and striaght into the linnets scattering them all over the place. I saw it again about 20 minutes later scattering the finches at the other end of the ditch as it flew off towards the railway. Normally i then go back along the river but today i walked down to where the works are going on and across the scrub near the house my reward was 30+ crows and nothing else until i reached the service road when out in front of me a possible jack snipe flew out i didn't get a good look but it seemed a bit small and the bill didn't seem long enough for a snipe. l went to where i thought it went down but it never showed again. all in all a good day with 4 year 1sts and a patch first (for me anyway). The only downer was not getting photo'sgreg Ahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02322583671543467701noreply@blogger.com0
